Medieval Pottery
The love of Medieval pottery came from my involvement with film / TV work and a Historical Promotions unit. Demonstrating the art of the longbow and it’s history, linked neatly with my own pottery and I researched Medieval throwing and wheel construction.
This was a time of the travelling Potter, an Artisan, not and Artist. Digging clay from the river bank, the resulting hole turned into an impromptu kiln. Ash from his nightly fire pit was used to glaze his pots.
Making and selling his wares for local needs. Making my own ‘momentum’ wheel, digging local clay and using ash glazes, combined with the beauty and simplicity of Medieval shapes.
I have, over the past 50 years, made many ‘Medieval’ influenced pots, for film, TV and re-enactors. Teaching adults, children, and people with enduring mental health issues.
I still produce all types of pots to commission but now specialise in period bird houses, feeders, nesting pots and the like. It is still my passion to experiment with wood fired kilns and develop ash glazes.

Roman Pottery
Using my Romano-type momentum wheel, I am creating pots typical of the Roman Occupation.
The Aylsham Roman Project is an active archaeological dig, excavating a kiln site. Many shards have been found and, it is my intention to make replicas, allowing the public to see, not only what a full-size pot would have looked and felt like, but it’s construction too. I hope to fire these pieces in a kiln, like those being excavated.

Other Pottery
Tea bowls or Chawan, is a “mere” bowl used to serve green tea.
These are made on my KARATSU type momentum wheel, constructed from oak and beech. All pots are wood-fired to 1310 degrees C and glazed.
